Alkyd paint, often referred to as oil-based paint, is an enamel finish made with synthetic resins (alkyds), mineral spirits or alcohol-based thinners, and pigment. It is known for its durability and strong adhesion. While commonly called "oil-based," it doesn't contain natural oil but is composed of chemical binders and thinners like oil paint. It dries hard, holds its sheen beautifully, and stands up well in high-traffic areas. The paint creates a smooth, enamel-like finish that resists scuffing, moisture, and repeated cleaning. Hybrid alkyd paints, also known as waterborne alkyds, combine the durability of oil-based paint with water-based cleanup and lower VOCs.
